Dia de los Muertos is a holiday primarily celebrated all over Mexico, Dia De Los Muertos is a family reunion for dead ancestors to come by and spend time with their living relatives. Many families set home altars that include food as decorations for example:
Mole nergro:
Mole nergro originally from Oaxaca, Mexico is a rich silky chocolate sauce that is made of dried/fresh chile, nut/seeds, and ranges from a variety of different colors mole negro is mainly served with chicken and rice and is one of the main dishes served on Dia de los Muertos
Pan de muerto ( The bread of the dead):
Pan de muerto is a pan dulce typically baked during the weeks leading up to Dia De Los Muertos. These breads are placed on the altar to feed the deceased family crossing. Pan de muerto is meant to be a sweet treat during Dia De Los Muertos typically only sold in Mexican bakeries.
Tamales:
Tamales are a traditional dish made of masa ( dough) made of nixtamalized corn. Tamales come in many different flavors such as elote( corn), pork, and chicken, as well as sweet ones containing dried fruits. Tamales are famous for a reason, the husk symbolizes the coffin, the masa is meant to be the body and the filling represents the body fluids.
Red pozole:
Red pozole is another really famous dish served during Dia De los Muertos, it’s a corn-based soup made of hominy(dried corn kernels) and pork. Pozole has a nice smokiness flavor. The hominy and pork float around a thick chile sauce. Pozole is topped off with fresh red radishes and lettuce with a fresh squeeze of lime and a pinch of salt and pepper. Yum!
Caramel flan:
On a sweeter note caramel flan is a Latin dessert made up of a caramel topping and custard base. Made with milk, egg, and sweetener it’s baked in a water bath for a fine texture. It has a flavorful taste of sweetness custardy caramel vanilla and an eggy taste. This delectable dessert is a key to enjoy on Dia de los Muertos.
Atole:
Atole is a traditional hot corn masa-based drink that comes in a variety of flavors such as vanilla, cinnamon, guava, etc. It is made up of brown sugar cane, cinnamon, corn flour, and milk. Atole is perfect for a cold rainy day. There’s really no other way to describe it other than delicious. Atole is typically popular during Christmas and Dia de los Muertos
