Destination Disney

By Isabella Brady

After six years, I returned to my childhood favorite: Disneyland. I had a blast. However, key aspects had changed since my previous visit, for both better and worse.

Negative Changes

The overwhelming crowds make it a necessity to have a Genie pass which grants you access to the lightning lane—which adds additional costs. Not only does it cost more, but Disney has made scheduling accessible by only mobile devices. Where attractions were once spontaneously decided, they are now meticulously chosen. Where families were once enjoying the company of others they are arguing, debating and peering into their devices. Admittedly, the process only takes a few minutes. But does it really? When I opened my phone to check the time (in anticipation of a reservation) I ended up scrolling through Instagram, texting friends and noticing, then inevitably viewing a college decision (thankfully, it was good news!). Nevertheless, while Disneyland may be making rides more accessible they are also embracing mobile devices as a paramount part of the experience.

Positive Changes

Allergy menus! As someone who has a wide variety of allergies and food restrictions, I was very impressed with the alterations the Disney franchise has made in making food more inclusive. Every restaurant I attended had an allergy menu which clearly stated below each entree which allergies it was safe for. The waiters and chefs are likewise very knowledgeable, conscientious and kind and prepare allergy meals in a separate space to ensure there is no cross contamination. There was always an option safe for me on the menu, and I am happy to report there were no issues in that regard.

Some restaurants I recommend:

  • The Blue Bayou (Disneyland)
  • Cafe Orleans (Disneyland)
  • Lamplight Lounge (California Adventure)

Star Wars — at Disneyland! So many of my friends and family had experienced this new addition to the park that I was excited to see it for myself. With an immersive setting, storm troopers circulating (even interrogating guests) and impressive attractions, I loved exploring this part of the park.

Avengers Campus: So cool! I went on the Guardians of the Galaxy Mission Breakout ride twice, and enjoyed the new attractions (definitely an upgrade from A Bug’s Life, which previously occupied the space).

Overall, the carefree and nostalgic experience was magical. Disneyland may be permanently altered from my previous recollections, but it is still an excellent destination!
