Transcendent Tamino

By Ojas Joshi

Scintillating strings, chilling chorus’, and harmonic minor harmonies—Belgian-Egyptian artist Tamino has it all. Featuring an interesting combination of Western pop and Arabic music, Tamino creates a unique, haunting feeling to all of his songs. More often than not, Tamino’s wide ranging vocals and beautiful chord progressions are accompanied by riffs in harmonic minor—a traditionally Middle-Eastern sounding key—creating an eerie mood within his music. Undoubtedly, Tamino’s unique style has been shaped by his upbringing. Born to a Belgian mother and Egyptian father, Tamino has immersed his multicultural identity into his music, crafting beautiful melodies with different tastes and emotions. My favorite song of his, “Intervals”, starts with an emotional string solo, slowly fading into Tamino’s ethereal vocals. Strong and powerful, the chorus slowly emerges. Drawing comparisons to Jeff Buckley and Radiohead, Tamino seems primed to blow-up within the indie-rock scene anytime soon.
