With the expansive phenomenon of TikTok, there are many different niches for specific people. Personally, TikTok has decided to place me on “booktok.” This side of TikTok mostly consists of book recommendations, reviews, and crushes on the main characters. Although I have read some good books from different recommendations, there have also been some books I can not even finish.
- It Ends With Us- 4/10
This book was WAY overhyped. Colleen Hover, the author of this book, arguably is not a good writer in general. Of the three books of hers that I have read, all three had very simple writing, and I would have to argue that it was the worst of the three I have read. The plot, shocking and intense as it was, was underwhelming due to all of the praise this book received from the TikTok audience. I found the main character annoying, and to put it simply, she was trying way too hard to be edgy. I was expecting my socks to be blown off by this book, and yet they stayed snuggly on my feet the whole time. If you are ever looking to read a Hoover book, I would recommend staying away from this one.
- The Love Hypothesis- 8/10
Although I can recognize that the writing in this book was also not the best, I deeply enjoyed the storyline, and this book in general. The Love Hypothesis was an easy read with a very vanilla storyline, however sometimes all you need is a simple book to cozy down with for some easy enjoyment. If you are looking for a quick feel-good read, this is the one for you.
- Verity- 8/10
Another book by Colleen Hover, Verity did not disappoint. I never knew what to expect at any given time with this book, and I can state with certainty that absolutely no one could have predicted the shocking end to this story. This was another book I finished in a day (again due to Hoover’s simple writing style), although this time I actually enjoyed every second of it. TikTok has started some heated debates over the events that occurred in this book, and if you want to join in on the fun I would definitely recommend picking up this book.
- The Song of Achilles- 6/10
The Song of Achilles, unfortunately, was another book I have deemed as overrated. I was promised that this book would make me laugh at some parts and uncontrollably cry at others, but frankly I was nothing more than underwhelmed during the course of this read. I do agree that if I had gone into reading with little to no expectations it would have been an enjoyable read, but TikTok simply could not shut up about this book. This book has an interesting take on Greek mythology and a new romance, however I would refrain from watching any related TikToks if you are curious to read it.
- A Court of Thorns and Roses- 9/10
I have heard the constant hate on this book, however there is just something so perfect about this wonderful series. A simple fantasy with a well-done love story and lots of action, A Court of Thorns and Roses was the perfect storm for a fantasy-lover like me. If you are searching for a book with good writing, this might not be the one for you, however the development of a strong female heroine and exciting romance never fails to rope me in. I would 100% recommend this book to anyone who likes or wants to get into fantasy.
- Shatter Me- 10/10
A ten book series may sound a bit daunting at first, however don’t let it turn you away from this fantastic read. Shatter Me legitimately made me feel like no other book, I loved the characters as if they were my own friends and hated the enemies as much as I would any real-life wrongdoer. There is a solid plot running through the entire series, not to mention an enthralling romance and a strong female heroine, which, as stated earlier, is always the recipe to peeking my attention. If you only feel like reading one of my recommendations, or just one TikTok book in general, make it this one. I can promise that you won’t regret it.
