Earlier this year, Tijuana had been the center of cartel attention when the Sinaloa Cartel carried out a large number of public attacks to display their power and influence on the people of Mexico and the Mexican government. Although a violent attack, they made sure that no tourists were hurt. On August 13, 2022, the Sinaloa Cartel created mass panic when they attacked multiple public transportation vehicles and blocked off roads all across Tijuana. After the attacks occurred, Tijuana Mayor Monserrat Caballero requested over 5,000 peacekeeping officers be deployed throughout Tijuana to maintain the peace. There were also reports of multiple transportation systems shutting down, however authorities believe that the Sinaloa Cartel was not responsible for the mass shut down. They do believe a New Generation Jalisco cartel is the culprit behind the attacks.
