Flutter of Delicate Wings

If you look around my neck, I wear a silver chain necklace with a dragonfly pendant. I bought it for  $10 and I never take it off, so I am pleasantly surprised that it has not rusted yet. But of course, dragonflies are my lucky symbol, so that may have something to do with it.

Growing up in San Jose/Campbell, I never really saw dragonflies. Sure, I saw a few here and there, but it wasn’t anything common like bees or birds. The first time I recall seeing a dragonfly was at Great America, where they flutter around and even circle around you as you plunge out of the air on rollercoaster rides.

In the midst of a breakup, I was slightly desperate and in despair. After seeing a Tik Tok of the universe giving people signs, I thought ‘what is the worst that could happen if I tried it?’ I did not perform any sort of ritual, just sat in my bed and said, “If it isn’t over yet, show me a dragonfly.” I thought a dragonfly was a good symbol because I was not going to Great America, and I did not see them often.

I honestly can’t remember if it was the next day or the day after that. However, as I was exiting my house, a dragonfly flew by me. Not only that, but it basically came right up to me, stopped, and then flew away. At first, I did not think anything of it. If I am being honest with you, I completely forgot that I had made that “wish.” However, as I got into the car it hit me. A dragonfly.

At the end of everything, the dragonfly was right.
