A great stride for women in politics! On January 27, 2022, Xiomara Castro was sworn in as the first female president of Honduras. Formally known as the first lady to husband Manuel Zelaya, Honduran President overthrown by a coup in 2009, she succeeds former President of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernández. Since officially elected on November 28, 2021, she has promised to turn around Honduras’s predicament by reforming “the crime-and poverty-stricken nation into a ‘socialist and democratic state.’” She is also hoping to improve the debt in Honduras along with better health care, employment, education, and security. In attendance to this historic event was US Vice President Kamala Harris, King Felipe VI of Spain, and Taiwan Vice President William Lai.
