Never Let Me Go

By Alessandra Kelly

Never Let Me Go, a dystopian science fiction novel, was written in 2005 by Kazuo Ishiguro. The movie follows the book to provide the same extraordinary moving, suspenseful, and beautifully atmospheric feel as the modern classic.

The film features Carey Mulligan, Andrew Garfield, and Keira Knightley which, in order, portray Kathy, Ruth, and Tommy. As children, Kathy, Ruth, and Tommy were students at Hailsham, an exclusive boarding school secluded in the English countryside. In the school, teachers constantly reminded the children of how special they were, and checked the students excessively for any impurities and health concerns.

Soon, the horrible truth of their true purpose is revealed to them by Miss Lucy, a teacher who recently joined the facility. The teacher suddenly disappears the next day, however, by then the students understand the future laid before them.

During the film, the friends simultaneously confront deep-seated feelings of love, jealousy and betrayal which threaten to tear their friendship apart. A deeply emotional film, each character brings the film to life, drawing you into the journey of the characters.

Best of all, the lovely, awe-inspiring, mind-boggling Andrew Garfield plays a sweet boy infatuated with the world, hoping to change the set outcome his life holds. Showcasing a terrific performance, Garfield wins the hearts of the audience and provides an intimate experience of true humanity till the end.
