Bruno Mars has many remarkable albums including Unorthodox Jukebox, 24k Magic, and his most recent album, An Evening with Silk Sonic. His music contains relatable lyrics and a variety of sounds. However, his best album is obviously Doo Wops & Hooligans. The songs on this first album demonstrate the talent of this great artist. He is soulful at times, and light at others, and occasionally, he sounds like Michael Jackson–able to hit incredible notes. His voice is soothing at times, rugged at others, and easy to listen to all the time.
Mars’ charming, young approach to lyrical direction seamlessly blends all of the correct rhymes and grounds the record while showcasing a beautifully explosive, soulful voice. “Grenade” opens the album with a Michael Jackson-like melody and a down-on-your-knees conviction. From there, an irresistible set of songs follows, including the warm pop ballad “Just The Way You Are,” the retro rock ‘n roll “Runaway Baby,” and the cleverish “Lazy Song,” in which Mars combines comedic charm with a blissful reggae groove to create an anthem for Lay-Z Boy hosts: “I’ll be lounging on the couch just chillin in my Snuggie/Click to MTV so they can teach me how to dougie.” With the additions of “Marry You” and the lovely ballad “Talking To The Moon,” Mars appears to be one of our generation’s most enthralling vocalists. “The Other Side,” the album’s conclusion, opens with Motown rhythm and a solid duet with Cee-Lo Green that sounds eerily similar to his Gnarls Barkley production.
This singer-songwriter and producer has collaborated with artists from several musical genres, providing him the necessary experience to create the sounds on his album. Mars’ diverse music and relevant lyrics make this album appealing to a wide range of listeners. Doo-Wops & Hooligans gives the impression of a genuine musician who, rather than following the trend of computer-generated music and autotune, relies on real instruments and raw vocals to win over listeners.
