All too often, on TikTok and other social media sites, individuals will post videos claiming statements along the lines of, “If you have these traits, you definitely have ADHD,” or, “Are you autistic and don’t even know it?” This can be harmful for many reasons, including the issue of young kids diagnosing themselves with disabilities and disorders they know nothing about; this trend perpetuates the stereotypes and stigmas around such disorders. Arguably an even more problematic effect of this trend, individuals who have been diagnosed and are struggling with these very real disabilities can feel as though their hardships are invalidated. While the fact remains that many individuals struggling with mental health issues do not have the resources available to be diagnosed and receive necessary help, such people should be encouraged to depend on more reliable resources rather than a social media app rampant with misinformation.
