Merry-Go-Round

By Julia Kemp

Sleepy mornings, cereal smiles

Barbie dolls and Justice styles

Sparkle dancing, secret fun

Hamster cage and cinnamon buns

Construction paper, iPhone four

Rainbow loom and wallball score

Crockpot meals, pawns and rooks

Disney channel and picture books

Floral covers, heater hiss

Bubblegum toothpaste and forehead kiss

I settle in and feel a dream

Spin across my closing eyelids

Little horses in a circle

Round and round

And round and round

And round and round and round

Around so fast

That the horses start to blur

And I can’t see you anymore

I call your name

And I tell you how scary it is

To spin so fast

And forget the rhymes of poems past

You grab a pillow and sleep near the window

You promise to stay through the night

I wake up and you’re gone

And I’m still spinning

It’s ever ending

It’s never slowing down
