Inherit The Wind* is loosely based on the 1925 Scopes “Monkey Trial,” which gained international attention during the courtroom battle between the presiding lawyers. State law at that time banned the teaching of Darwin’s Theory of Evolution. John Scopes, a high school science teacher, volunteered to stand as the defendant in a test case to challenge the law, with the ensuing trial pitting Charles Darwin’s “Theory of Evolution” against the Christian Bible’s story of “Creation.”
But the play’s larger message argues that every individual should have the right to think; the freedom to pursue independent thought and expression without being punished, fined, jailed or persecuted for it.
This play shows how ignorance and fear, coupled with a mob mentality, can lead to the suppression of the individual’s right to pursue and express their own truth – whatever that may be. In this play, truth, justice and the right of an individual to think for himself is on trial.
