The Fight for Gender Equality: Pay Wages

By Larena Tannert

Women’s rights are a topic that has gone unnoticed for many centuries. There are countless issues that fall under the category of gender equality between men and women, but one of the most crucial problems is unfair pay wages. A woman can have the exact same job as a man, and can put in twice the effort that man does, yet she still will get paid less because of her gender. Why should a female who works equally as much as a male get unequal pay? An example of this is Martina Navratilova, one of the most successful tennis players of all time. She was paid ten times less than her male counterpart, John McEnroe for the 2017 Wimbledon tennis championship coverage. Navratilova expressed her opinion on the situation by saying, “The bottom line is that male voices are valued more than women’s voices.”  There is a major difference in the way that women in the workforce are treated compared to men. Ever since women were allowed to enter the workforce they have been the victims of gender discrimination, and have repeatedly found their rights being disregarded. In the workforce women experience things like being paid less, being put in lesser positions, being ignored, disrespected and being sexually harassed. There needs to be a change. Women should not be put into these constant situations where they feel like they are not as important as a man. In reality, women are equal to men, and therefore should get treated that way, both inside and outside of the workforce.
