Slaying the Competition

By Ricky Thompson

The highest grossing manga (Japanese comic book), Demon Slayer, surpassed the sales of the second grossing manga tenfold in 2020. Written and illustrated by Koyoharu Gotōge, Demon Slayer has earned its popularity.

Each manga volume provides an exciting story as it follows a young member of the Demon Slayer Corp, Tanjiro Kamado, along with his unique friends and sister. Each character offers an interesting backstory and fighting style which adds to the depth of the great story.

Demon Slayer incorporates an impeccable balance of action, comedy, and anguish. Each battle is different as demons and demon slayers alike all have varying abilities while the action remains top class. Despite always being less experienced and less powerful than his enemies, Tanjiro and his allies always find a way to win. The drama between Tanjiro’s friends works as a break from constant battle to the viewer as they heal and have fun. Unlike many other popular mangas, Demon Slayer does not shy away from sorrow; not every character will survive throughout this manga series. Tanjiro’s selfless morals work as an example to every viewer on how to act as he sets an ideal standard for youth all around the world.

Not only did the anime adaptation gain widespread popularity, but the 2020 movie, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train quickly rose to success as it became the highest grossing movie of all time in Japan along with highest grossing animated movie of 2020.
